Aetna to Leave Exchange Markets in 2018

On May 10, Aetna announced that it will exit all of the Affordable Care Act exchange markets in 2018.    The insurer cites financial losses in its individual commercial products of close to $700 million between 2014 and 2016 as the determining factor in its decision.

It is not alone in its decision with three other mega-insurers, (Anthem, Humana & UnitedHealthcare), also significantly downsizing their offering in exchange markets.  Participation and rate filing for 2018 have an end of June deadline.
