Cigna Signs Deal to Acquire Express Scripts

Cigna has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Express Scripts for $67 billion in cash, stock and debt.  At the close of the deal, Cigna shareholders will own about 64 percent of the combined companies and Express Script shareholders the balance.

The new company will offer a full range of medical, behavioral and specialty pharmaceutical services.  It is anticipated that following regulatory approvals the acquisition will close before the end of the year.

Express Scripts and Walgreens Boots Alliance have recently teamed up to expand their purchasing clout for specialty pharmaceuticals.
