Fruita’s Hospital Expands and Partners

Colorado Canyons Hospital and Medical Center has undergone a $4.5 million expansion increasing the number of beds from 16 to 25, the maximum number allowed for a critical access designation.   A 20 person staffing increase will accompany the expansion.

The beginning of construction for the new build-out in August of last year coincided with a partnership established with St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction.   These two Western Slope hospitals decided to join together to provide more cost-effective, long-term care to area patients.

They jointly launched the “Transitional Care Program” that will move intensive care unit patients from St. Mary’s to Colorado Canyons Hospital for their long-term recovery.  A portion of the Fruita facility is designed specifically for this long-term care purpose.
