American Dental Association Sets New Opioid Policy

The American Dental Association has established a new policy to reduce the prescribing of opioid  medications as a primary pain management pro ducal by its members.  The Chicago-based association represents more than 160,000 dentists, nationally.

The new policy recommends the elimination of opioids as a pain mitigator whenever possible.  If an opioid is called for, the new policy suggests only writing a prescription for a single week’s worth of the painkiller.  Educating dentists on alternatives to this prescribing practice is also  recommended in the new policy.
