New Medical Campus Still an Option for Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge City Council voted earlier this week to rezone a 109-acre parcel at I-70 and 34th Avenue as a planned mixed-use development rather than its current commercial development designation.  The mixed-use zoning would allow SCL Health and its affiliated hospital, Lutheran Medical Center, to build a second medical campus on a portion of the parcel.  A final decision on the expansion is still in the works but the unanimous vote by council members adds impetus to the planning process.

A proposal earlier in the year by UCHealth to build an outpatient & primary-care facility on the parcel if rezoned, was met with strong opposition from the community.   There was concern that UCHealth would use the land to build a hospital to serve the western suburbs.   The property developer,  Evergreen Devco Inc., now plans a mixed-use development with housing, retail, office space and a medical campus.
