Amazon Makes Move Toward Online Pharmacy

Amazon has signed a definitive merger agreement with PillPack, an online pharmaceutical provider.   The timing of the  announcement came as a surprise to analysts.

The corporation had recently abandoned plans to enter the pharmaceutical and medical supply distribution business  for large hospital systems.  However, it appears that it still had its eye on a direct-to-consumer prescription drug business utilizing its extensive e-commerce reach.

The PillPack model provides customers with individualized daily rolls of pre-sorted medicines.  This reduces the possibility of dosage errors for patients taking multiple medications daily.

The two parties anticipate that the deal will close in the second half of 2018 given favorable regulatory review.
