M&A Doubles Last Year’s Six Month Total

In the healthcare sector, mergers and acquisitions have doubled year-over-year.  For the first six month of this year the sector total is $315.74 billion, compared with $154.87 billion in 2017.  Healthcare is the third most active sector, topped only by energy and media entertainment.

Two deals represent 43.1 percent of the healthcare M&A total, CVS Health’s acquisitions of Aetna at $69 billion and Cigna’s proposed $67 billion acquisition of Express Scripts.  Both deals require regulatory review.

For the market as a whole, if the trend continues in the second half of the year, 2018 is in line to be the largest yearly M&A total on record.
