CHI Reports Significant Operating Income Gains for FY 2018

Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) has reported a 53 percent increase in its operating income in fiscal year 2018 over the previous year.  This translates to an operating income gain of $317 million even with a drop in acute admissions of 3.4 percent.  CHI has been able to offset admission reductions with revenue cycle improvements and cost reductions.  The admissions drop is a trend that has been the experience of several hospital systems since 2009.

The merger with San Francisco-base Dignity Health is still in the works.  The merger would create the largest nonprofit hospital system in the country based on an operating revenue bases.  The deal is in the review process at the Department of Justice but parties anticipate that it will be completed by year’s end.
