U.S. Measles Cases on the Rise

Measles were declared eliminated in 2000.  However, global travel has return the disease to U.S shores.    As of March 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a total of 387 individual cases from around the country.  Colorado is one of fifteen states with confirmed cases this year.

If reporting continues at its current pace, 2019 could prove to be the highest number of cases since the disease was eliminated 19 years ago.  After the first quarter, 2019 has already seen  58 percent of the 2014 annual total of 667 reported cases.  The highest number since 2000.

According to the CDC, the measles vaccine, known as the MMR vaccine, is 97 percent effective in keeping you protected if the patient follows the two dose recommendation.  Prior to the introduction of the vaccine in 1963, an estimate 450 to 500 deaths were attributed to complications of the disease each year i the U.S.
