Recognize and Celebrate Registered Nurses this Week

May 6 marks the start of National Nurses Week, recognizing and celebrating the 4 million registered nurses nationwide. The celebration ends May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. Ms. Nightingale is widely credited for founding modern nursing.

The American Nurses Association launched the weeklong event in 1993 and is offering a toolkit with numerous resources to help celebrate nurses this week, including thank-you card templates, recognition certificates and email drafts.

For more than 15 years, Americans have rated nursing as the no. 1 most-trusted profession, says Gallup. In a poll conducted last year, Gallup found that 84% of those surveyed rated the honesty and ethical standards of nurses as “very high” or “high” — above that of doctors, pharmacists and teachers, certainly above used car salesmen and politicians.

Doctors demanded male nurses during the Civil War. Clara Barton defied them. The woman known as “the angel of the battlefield” created a support system for wounded soldiers and later founded the Red Cross. Read her amazing story in The Washington Post
